Access Denied in DOS

I am trying a last ditch effort to recover files. I am going to reformat because doing a update on XP caused the system to crash. When I try to copy files I can see in DOS I get the message Access Denied. I called my ISP and they were helpful but couldn't explain this problem either...I used "My Documents" since it said that is what to do with the space but then I get the access denied message? Does anyone have any expert advice?

Have you attempted a "Repair Install"?

This article describes how to take ownership of a file or folder
to which you have been denied access:

Thank you so much for replying. I am tyring to do a repair install and that is when I got to the DOS which shows my files but I can't seem to chdir or copy them without the access denied response. Since I can't right click anything in dos I can't follow the the ownership instructions...I'm still looking and trying and appreciate sooo much your help.

:
Use the CACLS.EXE command to change permissions of folders.
Type CACLS /? to view options.
