Access Computer Remotely

Not being savvy on using remote programs, I'm hoping someone can point me in
the right direction. Here's what I have, and would like to do.
From my home computer (on cable), remotely connect to my laptop (on wireless
DSL) at another location. If necessary, the DSL can be direct hook-up (not
wireless). This is to operate A/C and Heating units (setting and monitoring
temps). Is this possible?

As far as I know WinVNC will do the job.

Has anyone else had any experience with this program? If so, what are your
comments/recommendations/ect?
