Access 97 fails

Office 97 almost works on my Win XP SP2 machine.
Access 97 cannot retrieve external data. The error msg is to the effect
that I do not have access to the folder containing the file I want. The drop
down menu in the "Get External Data" box is not fully populated which must be
a clue. I have re-installed Office 97... also all of the upgrades including
the Jet 35 update. It seems likely to be a Win XP problem, but ???
Possibly related ... all of the folders on this machine have a dimmed check
in the 'Read Only' checkbox. It cannot be changed!
