There are a couple of cookies that I would like to set as always accepted or
at least never deleted when I clean out the rest of the cookies. The primary
one is the cookie for my anti-virus automatic updates to work. If I delete
this cookie I am unable to recieve automatic updates because I have to log
in to the site in order to receive the update. Is there a way to provide an
exemption to a specific cookie so that it is not deleted with the rest of
them?
I have gone to Tools>Internet Options>Privacy>Advanced and tried to add the
site to the sites list but it does not stay in the list when I exit IE.
Is there some trick to setting the "always allow" feature when I choose to
override automatic cookie handling?
I noticed that the "sites" button is grayed out if I have the slider set to
"accept all cookies". Is there a minimum level that must be set in order to
add to the sites list?
What am I doing wrong that I am unable to add to the managed web sites
list?
TIA......... Mark N.

Hi,
If you select a Privacy setting other that "accept all" or "block all" you
should be able to use the Edit button to accept or block cookies from
selected sites.

I use a setting of Low and when Ad-aware or Spybot flags a tracking cookie,
I add that site to the blocked list.

After you type in the website, then "allow" you're clicking OK, right? Also,
you only have to type in this much of the URL "symantec.com" to allow or
block a cookie. Are you entering too much, such as www.somesite.com/update ?

Hope this helps,

I have gone to IE>Tools>Internet Options>Privacy>Advanced and tried every
setting between low and high on the slider and typed in "mcafee.com" in the
box that says "address of web sites:"; clicked OK, clicked Apply, and
clicked OK one more time but the setting does not take hold. I don't even
have to exit IE, I just have to close the Internet Options. When I go back
the site that I added is gone.
There are two sites listed there as "always block" but I did not add them
there. I suspect that Spybot S&D may have added them there. They are
..gator.com and .lop.com (note the dot preceding both entries) Is the dot
necessary?

I suspect that this issue may be due to one of the settings in S&D or
perhaps Ad-Aware. I will explore that avenue and post back my results.
In the meantime, if anyone else has any ideas regarding this matter, I would
welcome their input.
Thanks .......Mark N.

Update>
I have checked the settings for the following programs and have found
nothing that would prevent me from setting my cookie handling preferences:
Spybot S&D
Ad-Aware
SpywareBlaster
Mcafee Antivirus
I am using XP media center edition on this computer, however I have a second
computer that has XP home edition with the same programs listed above that
is having the same problem.

Hi,
Sorry, I don't have any other ideas except that I would take another look at
any "real time" protection from the programs you've mentioned. Spybot's
"immunize" feature, "bad download blocker," etc.

Regarding the lop and gator entries- the dot (.gator.com) isn't necessary.
Putting gator.com in the block list would be enough.

all 4 have forums? if so, search for teh trouble there?

you could aslo try using another browser for mcafee updates.

I am beginning to wonder if the cookie handling has been over-ridden by an
XML privacy file that was imported into the IE security settings. I have
been researching this isssue and alot of the posts that I have read have to
do with XML files and a privacy protocol called P3P.
I searched my registry for .lop.com and .gator.com and both were listed as
folders under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\P3P\History, along with hundreds of other folders with the names of
known banned sites.
I have not yet tracked down which of the four programs is responsible for
making the change, but I am reasonably certain it is one of them.

IIRC those ..P3P\History... are the settings in your internet optoins, privacy tab, (cookies) Sites.. (button, goes to that list)
