How do I locate my account name for updates or upgrades
Windows XP Home
Internet Explorer
 
Does your login account (the one you use to get into Windows) have administrator rights?
If yes, that's all you need to get to Windows / Microsoft Updates.

I guess you are talking about updating Windows.
If you have Administrative rights or permission then go to
Windows/Microsoft update to download and install the latest updates.
