hey everyone!! i have a serious problem with my computer. i can hear audio
all kinds of it. i can hear my wavs just fine. the problem comes when i try
to play mp3s. the sound seems to be garbled or like some effect been applied
by default( its like the "underwater" one). it was working absolutely fine
uptil a week back.

any ideas what i could try and do.

btw i have already downloaded and installed the mpeg layer 3 codec for mp3s
but that dint work. so i completely uninstalled and reinstalled all software
drivers. but even that did not help. i managed to get the mp3s atleast
listenable by adjusting the settings through soundman ie adjust the reverb
and other stuff there where you have all of those effects like room, generic
etc are listed in the soundman. The odd thing here is that this happens by
default. If i put it back to none ie no effects the problem comes back again.

Thanks in advance

other suggestions.

check to see the playback properties. perhaps you are playig them back to a
digital output as opposed to analog or vice versa.

What do your event logs say happened "a week back"?

thanks for your reply guys but nothing that would be helpful has been posted
as yet.

Mungo,
The event viewer does not show anything that i would call out of the
ordinary. any other suggestions??

can you tell me where in the registry i could look for settings stored by
ac97 soundman application. on the other hand is there a file that stores all
of its settings?
