Absolute Reference for Linked files

Main spreadsheet is linked to several data spreadsheets. When you move the
main spreadsheet to another drive and/or directory the links are
automatically changed also. Normally this is a good thing and I use it
often.

But have a few files where the link must stay pointing to the data files in
the old location. Nor a real problem changing the link, except explaining
it to remote novice users with protected templates. Is there a way to make
it static like the absolute reference $A$7 in cells?

Thanks

Unfortunately, no. This is a very longstanding flaw in Excel, unlikely
to be fixed during this geological epoch.

If you open your main workbook, the do a file|SaveAs to the new location, don't
the links still point back to the original location?

(Maybe you could "move" the workbooks via File|SaveAs and then delete the
original main workbook.)

Yes, the file|SaveAs method works.
But it's a template(xlt) file being transferred to remote users laptops and
they too often can not or will not follow the detailed instructions
required.
Was just hoping an absolute link would solve one of the issues. Thanks for
the input
