I have done an SP2 install on three different machines now with the same
results. I have flashed to the latest bios and upgraded most all of the
hardware to the latest drivers i could find. Every time I install SP2 to
these machines I get about 50 unknown devices in the device manager. I can't
get rid of them and they keep showing up.
It is happening on a Dell Optiplex GX150, GX240 and Precision 530. Anyone
have these problems? Help.

Dell's are very unique. I have seen previous posts (here) stating that you
may need to get an update from Dell in order to successfully have SP2
install.

I just did a batch of Optiplex units and Dimension units (including
laptops) and didn't have any problem.

What hardware is common to the units?

3Com 3C90X NIC's intigrated
Intel Motherboards
SoundMax Intigrated Audio

Just a side note.... I installed it on a Optiplex GX 260 and GX270 with no
problems. They have all been fully patched, and I ran Spybot and Antivirus
program before installing SP2. What gives??

When you flashed your bios did the bios docs actually say it would
address and/or fix such niggles?

Or did you just flash to the latest bios and cross your fingers and hope
for the best?

Unfortunately, sometimes the first advice Dell support poeple give is to
flash to the latest BIOS revision, whether or not it adresses specific
problems the user is having.

Out of curiosity when you set these pc's up, did you reload windows
from scratch, or did you just use the default Dell image from the
factory? If the default image, then be aware that it includes drivers
installed for hardware that is not actually installed (i.e RAID/SCSI
drivers) You can tell this in device manager by going through the
hardware lists.

We ALWAYS wipe out the dell image and reload at work because we found
some goofiness with how some of our applications behaved with these
images.

One test i would do is reload a pc with SP1, set up all your software,
then apply the SP2 update to see if it does the same thing. My guess
is it will work correctly. It does for us.
