Abandon Win Mail and Use Thunderbird 2 instead?

Hi Folks

Like many others, I've wasted more than enough time trying to get Windows
Mail to work yet it remains completely unreliable. I have Windows Live Mail
but it does not meet my needs (e.g. no provision for sub-folders or bulk
despatch of emails). The email client "Thunderbird" has been recommended to
me (though by an XP user - not Vista). I would be grateful for any views
please.

Cheers,
John

Can you elaborate on the "no provision for sub-folders"?
I just tested this and had no problem creating sub-folders in WLM.
Also, what do you mean by bulk dispatch?

Hi Gary - thanks for replying ...

Well, I've again tried to create sub-folders in WLM but no luck. First I
created a folder called "Main" then I tried to create a sub-folder called
"SubMain": folder "SubMain" appears as a 'top level' folder - i.e. the
same level as "Main".

By "bulk dispatch" I mean a facility like both Outlook Express and Windows
Mail have whereby you can email to a group of contacts all in one go (just
by entering the Group Name in the 'To:' field.).

Cheers
John

I find Windows Mail to be very reliable. I use it on two machines (we only
have two Vista machines so far).

While I don't like Windows Live Mail, I can't see how you can have a problem
creating subfolders in it. Just right click a folder and choose New Folder.
In fact, unlike Outlook Express, they really are stored as subfolders.

Is "Main" under Storage folders or an account folder? I ran my initial test
on an account folder, but I just retested with a folder under Storage,
and that was successful also.

Be sure "Main" is highlighted, then right-click on it, select "New folder..."
It should create that new folder underneath the currently selected folder.

What happens when you enter a Group name in the 'To:' field?
Seems to work for me. Not only that, but I can click on the plus (+)
in front of the Group name, and it expands to show individual members
of that group, so you can delete some if you want.

Hi Frank

Thanks for replying. Well ....

You say "I find Windows Mail to be very reliable" - I did for some
considerable time but then, gradually, it started to foul up and has become
progressively worse ever since. I do hope the same doesn't happen on your
machines.

I'll have to have another go with trying to create sub-folders in Windows
Live Mail (I'm using my XP Pc at the moment in order to send this message)
but I'm pretty sure I used the same method as you describe.

Cheers,
John

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of Trend's
anti-virus seems to be causing problems too.

OK, good luck!
