ok, i cant find one freakin place on this site to email a
simply problem to microsoft, so much for customer
support. When you try to download the service pack 1 for
windows xp, if you have a compaq computer, be prepared
for some problems. I did it and my computer crashed and
would not start up into windows at all, i had to perform
2 system recouveries, just a notice of warning.

Actually, your complaints (and calls, emails, etc.) should be to Compaq,
the wonderfully proprietary computer manufacturer whose dreadful little
box you chose to buy. You should always look on the computer mftr.'s
website for downloads for your particular computer because companies
like Compaq and HP do *non-standard* things to their computer setups,
both software and hardware-wise.

Greetings --

Yes, all this was well publicized more than a year ago when SP1
was released. Both HP and Compaq had to provide patches to make their
"customized" OEM versions of WinXP compatible with the service pack.

Hi:
I have two exact identical machines manufactured by hp
with xp in both. One of machines, I did install SP1 back
in the early part of Spring, ... but for some reason the
machine/XP started 'very sluggish,' and many of the sites
I used to visit refused to open, saying 'Page not
displayed,' or 'your ram is low and the such, ...' Then,
I posted here, in NG in my desperation to find the
solution on this. One 'EXPERT' who is still around here
to give terrific answers often explained on this, ... 'hp
putting their own tools that interfere with XP/SP1 that
causing 'sluggish machine,' and except 'Security' don't
install SP1. I did listen to this advice, ... since
then, my machine/XP is running VERY fast and terrific
without any problems. Just recently, I did
install 'Blaster Worm' in both machines and running very
well without any problems.

Unlike you, however I never experienced 'crash' due
to 'SP1.' Then, I just wonder whether this, 'SP1' is to
be a 'culprit(?).' Either way, probably the best
solution is contact the manufacturer of your computer.
In my case, I usually call, rather 'e-mail.' Those
tech. guys in HP are so cautious and first of all VERY
HELPFUL on your problem. Then, I have no regret for my
choice, HP. Actually, my printers(3), two computers and
scanners, even ink-jets and papers, ... all are hp
brand. Maybe, I'm basically HP Big fun?

Unfortunately, Compaq didn't buy DEC for their superior hardware.
Compaq bought DEC for the primary purpose of getting its world-class
(and world-wide) support and logistics capabilities. Those have also
gone the way of the dodo, now that HP has put its mark on everything.

Yeah, isn't it something that the richest company in the
world can't afford to provide FREE support like every
other software/hardware company -- even the poor ones.
What would you think if you bought a toaster with a one
year warranty and it cost you 35 dollars to call someone
to find out how to turn it on... oh yeah, forgot, no
warranty on windows. hmpf!

They do - last time looked you got two free support incidents on any
retail WinXP copy. And installation support. That's why they costs 2x
what an OEM copy does.

Take it up with your PC supplier. In return for getting to deliver XP to
you at half price (or less) they agreed to handle the support. Suggest
you make them live up to that .. or else build you own, pay retail XP
prices, and get free MS support for it.
