a virus that cannot be removed

I apologize if I am asking questions of the wrong group but a friend
keeps forwarding jokes to me that contain a virus.
Earthlink lets me know this fact and tells me: "EarthLink Virus Blocker
has quarantined a message sent to you because it contains a virus that
cannot be removed or disabled." I emailed my friend to notify whoever is
sending the virus to her to clean their computer and for my friend to also
run the Norton scan to rid herself of the virus. My friend says, "I got a
notice today that the Norton anti virus program was updated and everything
is hunky dorey." How can that be? What should I tell my friend to do?

You've done all you can. Your friend may not have actually sent the message
in the first place - it could have been sent from someone who has you and
your friend in their address books.

What Shenan says. To elucidate a little, viruses either use email
addresses scavenged from infected machines or generated email
addresses to *fake* the sender address on an email. Someone who knows
you and your friend's email addresses has been affected. The email
addresses may have been acquired third or fourth hand. To simplify,
once you get onto the Internet, for various reasons, your email
address is public property!

Someone or rather some program has sent messages to you with a virus
and Earthlink as your email provider has properly informed you. Since
it apparently comes from your friend Earthlink has said so. However it
almost certainly comes from a third party who is infected with a virus
and has faked your friend's email address. IMO Earthlink should know
that and said so.

You basically owe your friend an apology!

Cheers,

Cliff
