A Taskbar Problem

Good Morning:
I have a sales guy who complained last night that while working on his Dell Latitude in XP Pro, he had a program crash on him and he had to reboot. When the system came back up he opened word and worked for a while on something. Then he went to minimize and the program icon didn't apear on the taskbar. He then opened several other programs and minimized them all and none appeared in the taskbar. He can only open them by first opening the task manager. Allthe setting seem to look normal. I opened the taskbar properties and closed the quick launch tool bar and the whole taskbar disapeared. The only way to get it back was to turn the quick launch tool bar back on. Rebooting was the first step and that didn't fix it. Any ideas?
