Free PDF Compressor Freeware 288KB Version 1.12
Compress PDF file and reduce the actual size of PDF document with this
completely free PDF Compressor.
Free PDF Compressor removes duplicate PDF objects, optionally takes
advantage of new compression features of latest PDF specifications that
for many classes of documents compresses 30 - 60% better than what is
possible in PDF 1.5.

Free PDF Compressor allows you to shrink PDF file by using Flate or
RunLength compression algorithm. With this freeware, you are able to set
the compression level to generate PDF files of smallest size.

Another benefit of this freeware utility is that you can decompress or
expand any PDF file to its original size for better conversion from PDF
to other formats.

Maybe you need to open your eyes before you open your mouth ..... and I
think an apology to the OP would be in order too.

Sorry, yes. I apologize. Stoopid me, I looked at the top of the page
only. Please excuse. I won't be so hasty to criticize next time,
without checking it out.

Not too good on compression, compressing a file from 48,131kb to 43,318 kb
isnt very good compression.

Same here, lesson learned...READ THE WHOLE PAGE! My apologies.

I've run a series of tests. Using default compression, it actually
made files slightly bigger. I switched to "maximum" and it apparently
reduced the size by 50%. I compared the reduced file to the original
and could find no difference in quality.

I was just about to contradict those who say it doesn't work when I
started running into problems. When I tried to compress a 25 MB file,
it got bigger. When I tried a second time, using the same settings, it
showed a size of 6 MB (!). Then I refreshed Windows Explorer (F5) and
all the apparent compressions went away. Every "compressed" file was
slightly larger than the original.

I agree: it doesn't work (dang). Any other ideas on what might be
going wrong?

Wayne

My first tests were done on pdf files created by my scanner. I tried
it on pdfs created by capturing a web page. Didn't work.

I tried it on a pdf file downloaded from the web. This time it seemed
to work: a 1,038 KB file was reduced to 373 KB (compression was same
whether I used default, fastest, or maximum).

I thought the answer was that it works on "native" pdf files but not
pdfs created by scans and captures. But I downloaded several more pdf
files and it didn't work on them either.

So I guess the answer is: it mostly doesn't work.

I am always cautious about "compression" software tests where the original
file might well already be compressed. Since you can't tell, you can't be
sure of the effectiveness of the algorithm used to recompress the file.

Mike,

I think you're right. My scanner software probably compresses the pdf
file when it creates it. The other pdf files I downloaded were also
likely compressed. Thanks, Wayne

Looks handy too, I have a ton of stuff in PDF format on my pocket USB
drive, even stuff like bus and train schedules can be greatly
compressed.

I haven't tried this software yet, but it sure RARs well :)

My first tests were done on pdf files created by my scanner.

How can a scanner create a pdf file ? Scanners usually scan. Creating
a graphics file eg. .jpeg.
I tried
it on pdfs created by capturing a web page. Didn't work.

A captured web page would not generally be a pdf file. What program
are you using to change a web page to .pdf ?
