if I buy a new Mobo, and install it, I have to re-install Windows yea? Do I lose all the data on my disk with it?

*puts on dunces cap in anticipation and sits in the cornr*

No ... Win3.1 will still work. Or are you using a later version of Windows?

Ah XP
Well a lot depends on what "chipset" you already have as to what chipset you're going to get.

XP doesn't like surprises, so replacing the MB can, and is often fatal, without precautions, none of which guarantee a success.

Best to take the opportunity to back-up all data and start anew with a clean install.

If you wish to “try it and see” you may be lucky.

yeah it may work ok, backup though! Depends if the change involves adding loads of new drivers for onboard sound etc. I'd give it a shot, would save time if it did work, no harm done if it doesn't!

It's not a stupid question, it's quite a pertinent question, in fact.

That was almost a big word, wasn't it? (pertinent) ;)

I've tried to do that thing many times.

It's never, ever, worked completely successfully. It may appear to have worked initially, but in my experience, you'll encounter problems later, along the way.

Best option is to back up what you can (don't forget e-mail addresses and saved game folders) and do a fresh install.

Sorry, but that be the truth :(

well Kenny u seem to have poached the question from my frame of mind!!!!

at least i`m not the only one with that on their mind.... :)

Will prob back up what I can. I`m not a big liker of surprises either

clean install, XP won't like it due to the hardware ID being different.

touch and go
