A strange Win98 Problem

My boss has Windows 98 w/all updates. Recently when he goes to a web page
and rightclicks/open in new window, IE opens as a blank frame with the
buttons in tact. He can click stop/refresh and the page opens. If he is on a
site that forces IE to open in a new window, and left clicks on the link,
nothing happens. I have tried all the regsvr32 tips and tricks I could find
to the point where yesterday, we formatted the drive and re-installed
windows. It seemed fine for awhile and reverted back to its old behavior
quickly. I am assuming at this point that it is probably not IE, but I am at
a complete loss. I tried Repair, SFC, and remove re-install. Also, when
going thru the updates page we can get to the point where you click "install
now" and it just sits there. I am thinking it could be a hardware problem,
but I am just not sure where to turn next.

Thanks for any help

First eliminate any scumware.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

**Post your HijackThis log to

Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder

If nothing there helps, please post back to this thread.

Frank,
After trying your suggestions, nothing was found or appeared in the scans
of CW Shredder
I am extermely frustrated over this. I have uninstalled and re-installed IE,
and the fact that
I formatted the drive and re-installed Windows makes me think it is
something
other than IE.

Thanks,

All these ideas have been exaustively tried, and to no avail.

I may end up trying netscape just to see if it works

I was IE6 on Win98 were FAILED, Because I was tried and tried it.... So,
noone answer from email and newsgroup, then gave it up.

I force backup the data and registry data into ZIP100 drive then wipe a hard
disk and re-installation Win98 fresh and update pack, and installation a
IE5.5 SP2 is better than IE6 is too risk for Win98.

Why Microsoft doesn't test the IE6 on Win98 with third party applications
can be KILLING !!

But other WinME, Win2000 and WinXP are fine for IE6 isn't problem.

It relates to OLEAUT32.dll
The version I had was v3.50.5041.
I replaced it with an older versdion 2.40 and that fixed it
It also relates to another problem with the v.3.50.5041.0 which is
Erro: 35 Incompatible Version of the RPC Stub by going to the edit/find in
internet explorer

YAAAAAA!!!!! 2 weeks on this

If you knew about this error you could have found a solution on google very
fast.

Fix from "Doud":

How To: Fix "Error 35: Incompatible Version of the RPC Stub"

This error occurs when trying to use the "Find" function with Internet
Explorer. It is caused by a fault in v3.50.5041.0 OLEAUT32.DLL. Replace it
with an earlier version to fix the problem. Since it is a system file, you
will have to replace it using DOS. Copy the older version to C:\. Then go
to the start button and restart your computer in MS-DOS Mode. If you have
WindowsME, see below on how to do this.

Once in DOS Mode, type the following (no quotes): "copy C:\OLEAUT32.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\OLEAUT32.DLL". When asked if you want to overwrite, type
"Y". It will then say "1 file copied". Then restart your computer
(alt+ctrl+del or you can just load windows by typing "win" at the DOS
screen).

For Windows ME Users: To load WinME in DOS mode, copy "COMMAND.COM" and
"IO.sys" from "C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\EBD\" to a formatted floppy disk. Then
restart your computer with the floppy disk in the floppy drive and DOS will
boot.
