A slow system sometimes

I have a system
Compaq, Athlon 64, Xp media, 512 mb ram, 160 gb SATA HD.

It is very slow to load, slow to start a program after re-starting, slow
first screen on IE.
When I say slow I mean terrible.

A second indication is playing music from any web, it stutters.

Playing music from a CD through windows stutters, playing through realplayer
is fine.
Indications are a slow HD.

I have run every test available and cleanup and defrag for the HD. I have
run the seagate test which says OK.

Most EI screens load quickly once IE is up and running.

I don't see any clear indication that it is the HD and nothing seems wrong
with the motherboard.

It would seem that a slow or faulty RAM would show at ROM boot / test.

I hate to get another HD only to find that the MB is bad.

Comments?
Yes there is always, get another tower.

Run Memtest to see if you have a problem with you RAM:

Hi Vernon,

Check to make sure your HD isn't running in PIO mode rather than DMA. See

Also do a thorough check for malware:
