A reliable way of exporting threads of messages to a (reliable;-)) database?

Hi all,

I am subscribed to some discussion threads, that come in via normal email
(Yahoo groups threads). When they arrive, they are rerouted to a folder. In
the folder I now have about 16000 messages, in a number of threads. It is
vital that I don't loose this information, and since the *.pst format is
known to give problems sometimes, I want to export it to a reliable
database, also, of course, keeping the possibility of watching the threads
(like I now can, when I select "display messages by thread"). I have nothing
against MS (well, a little, sometimes;-)), but I don't like MS Access for
that reason. Can anybody recommend something to me? I would be VERY
gratefull to you all(!).

Thanks & take care,

Jos

PS XPPRO, Office XPPRO.

Jos,

Don't know what version you have, but in my OL2000 on XP this works for me:
On the menu, select File>New>Personal Folders File (pst). I name one
January, one February, etc.
I move all messages each month to an appropriate folder. I can leave last
months open in OL to use as needed. I close the others but can easily open
with the file menu. Keeps them small and manageable. I even back up my
contacts folder by copying to the .pst then copy the whole pst to a CD. For
messages, this works better than a database to me.

Hope this works. Please post back either way.
Good Luck

Hi;-),

Thanks a lot for your reply. The problem, however, is the fact that I don't
want the messages stored in a *.pst, since that is known to give problems
sometimes;-(, and the MS inbox repair tool doesn't work well in a lot of
cases (it doesn't recover all files, only you don't see that with a clear
error).

But thanks a lot for your reply;-),

Jos

Then you'd better stop using your computer altogether, as they have been
known to have problems sometimes.

There are only two messages stores for Outlook: Exchange and a PST. If
you're a home user, you have no choice but the PST.

No, that is not true. I've read about a software program that exports it to
MySQL, the problem is: I can't seem to find it anymore. That's what I am
asking for.

Jos,

Just played around with it and it works. Although looks strange to me, it
may be what you want. On the menu, I went to File>Import and Export>Export
to a file>dBase> and gave it a name and location. I then opened Access,
created a blank database and imported the dBase file. Sure enough, it was
all there! Weird to view in database format, but there none-the-less.

Hope this works. Please post back either way.

Hi:-),

Thanks a lot for your help;-). I don't like MS Access that much (as I wrote
before), because actually I don't trust MS files;-(. But aside from that,
even if I were to use MS Access, I need to be able to view the messages by
*thread*; I don't see myself doing that (I am a nerd on MS Access). Do you
know how to?

Again my friend, thanks for the help;-)
