Any of you know of a program which can scan a file, or a directory of
files and try to determine what kind of type the file is? Based on the
content of the file, not a file type?

Ie, something like

file Aaaaaaa is a jpg picture
file bbbbbbb is a wav sound

etc

?

You want something like this:

There is mpftype http://www.mirkes.de/en/freeware/oldstuff.php
This is a wrapper for the regularly updated library winex32.dll, which
must be downloaded seperately from this Japanese page
http://www.55555.to/

The status (freeware?) of winex32.dll is unknown.
I changed the subject line in the hope that honyakusha would be so kind
and check out if he can help.

There is also TRID http://mark0.net/soft-trid-e.html

This page appears to be a programmer's blog.

The site http://www.55555.to/ has a table, the headings of which are as
follows:

Free Software Ver. Updated on SIZE Operation
Explanations Download Confirmed
at link for foll. OS

So my first conclusion is that all software under the 1st column on this
page are free software.

I just looked up the Japanese page http://www.55555.to/what/wed.htm
which you get to when you click on winex32.dll Ver.1.27 at the link
www.55555.to

There's a small note in Japanese that says:
ABOUT winex32.dll

This is a dll that assists in distinguishing extensions and is meant for
developers. Before use, make sure you read the file winext32.text.

-------------------------------------------------------------

The file can be downloaded when you click the link under Ver. Download.

If you need further information, you can send me the readme.txt file.

Hope that helps a bit.

<SNIPPED>

I expected it to be freeware, but it would be nice to have confirmation.
This already looks promising.

Thank you, very helpful. :)
I have zipped up the WinEx32.txt that comes with v1.27 and uploaded to

Looks like it can be safely concluded that the dll and mpftype (the
wrapper for it) are freely distributable freeware.

Muchos grazias!

I just followed the links above, and all in that section looks in good

(In fact, I think those particular authors all make nothing but freeware
products.)

OP is either flat mistaken or else, perhaps basing his (top-sekrit) allusion
on some product in another section of the page....

Oh, and as to Craig?

Ignore him, Susan. He thinks he's such a tease. ;)
