I want to join a news group called Alt.fan.pratchett, but
I don't know what my server is, can someone tell me how I
find out? Thanks
 
Try contacting your ISP about news access. Most ISP's provide you with news
access.

Call your ISP and ask them whether they have a newsserver and
what its name is.
