On my computer ( which is a Packard Bell with XP home pre-installed)
I have the following
JRE 1.5.0_01
JRE 1.3.1_01
JRE 1.5.0_04
and

What is the difference between them and do I need them ?

Those are all outdated version of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE).
For increased security and functionality, you might want to remove all
of them and install the latest version:

Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 7

JRE means Java Runtime Environment.
Java2SE is Java Standard Edition version 2 or Java 2 Platform
that includes Java Development Kit (JDK) and JRE.
If you have JDK you don't need JRE because you get this in JDK.
Last version of JRE is 1.5.0 (build 1.5.0_07-b03).
You don't need all those you mentioned. Retain 1.5.0_04
and delete through Control Panel the others.
Update if you want but, first, delete the retained.
If you have no problems with java apps, do not update.
Regards.

If you are using any version of Sun Java that is prior to JRE Version 5.0,
then you are strongly urged to remove any/all versions that are prior to JRE/JSE
Version 5.0. There are vulnerabilities in them and they are actively being exploited.
It is possible that is how you got infected with malware.

Therefore, it is highly suggested that if there are any prior versions of Sun Java
to Version 5 on the PC that they be removed and Sun Java JRE/JSE Version 5.0 Update 7
be installed ASAP.

Simple check, look under...
C:\Program Files\Java

The only folder under that folder should be the latest version...

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_07

1.5.0_04 is a vulnerable version and should be removed and replaced by 1.5.0_07.

I said: "If you have no problems with java apps".
There is no unvulnerable software.
If you have a good antivirus, you can minimize that vulnerability.
I have last version by automatic ckecking.
Others gave you the advice to update.
Do what you think is the better to you.
Remember, before update remove all java instances through Control Panel.
Regards.

Simpley put...

It is vulnerable and actively being exploited such malware as the Vundo Trojan and the
Virtumonde Adware and should be removed and replaced. It is NOT a concept of "If you have
no problems with java apps", it is a mtter of COMSEC.

What do you think is the better to you ?
Is that ? OK ! Do it ! Don't waste your time arguing.
I, myself, prefer to argue with my friend Ludwig,
and it is what I'm going to do, now.
It's midnight, here, maybe four hours difference
from Jersey, the same mild temperature, no winds,
no clouds, the perfect environment, after a little
chat with Ludwig, for a good sleep.
The same to you.

Regards.

Done that and removed ...

C:\I386\Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03.msi
C:\I386\JavaW.exe

.... the latter calling and not finding the former.

There was also C:\I386\Java.exe dated the same as C:\I386\JavaW.exe. I
presume that this can also be removed OK. Can you confirm that this
Java.exe of that date can safely be removed. After I _had_ removed
Java.exe to the Recycle bin, the Sun web-site verified a Java runtime
environment.

C:\I386\Java.exe and C:\I386\JavaW.exe and part of Microsoft's version of Sun Java, MSJVM,
not the Sun Java I ma referring to.

I already had had it, at dinner.
Red, which is good by itself and, at least, against arteriosclerosis.
White has too many salts that gives me a damned thirst. ;)

Portugal has some really great Red Wines. I prefer Red over White.
