In the course of resizing display settings after a video game had
altered them, my wife was prompted to re-start and found all folders
gone from the screen, along with the start button. What to do? With
everything hidden off screen at extreme left, we used the cursor to
fish items from the hidden portion. We got back the 'Start' button
BUT did not manage to re-set Display to normal. Why not? Because for
some obscure reason clicking Start : Settings : Control Panel :
Display did not result in the appearance on-screen of the necessary
Display panel area
Presumably the display panel is hidding somewhere at lower left off
screen. But the disappearance of the Display panel presents a real
puzzle. All explanations of how to alter display settings require the
'Display' panel to be present on-screen. Then, one alters the display
settings by sliding the resolution bar. But since in our case the
'Display' panel is hidden, this procedure is not available to us.
Microsoft Windows 2000's 'Help' file does not mention this
possibility. Nor does it suggest any alternative way of altering the
display settings, aside from using the Display panel.
What to do? Is there a simple way of getting the display settings
back to normal? What's the solution? Something in DOS? Or what?
