_restore files after update from WinME to XP

I recently updated from Windows ME to Windows XP. After
installation I ran Norton AV which identified virsus
signatures and spyware signatures in files contained in
the _Restore\* folders on my C:\ drive. I assume that
these are compressed restore files from my previous ME
installation (I understand that XP uses a different
location to store the restore files). Is there a problem
with deleting these files? Since I believe that they
were or are protected files, is there a special procedure
for deleting?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Doug,

Go ahead and delete them, but do it the right way. There are three ways to
easily remove restore points (you should not do this selectively).

1) Start/run cleanmgr.exe (disk cleanup), there is a "clean up" button on
the "more options" tab to remove all but the newest restore point.

2) Control Panel/System/System Restore tab, go to settings and reduce the
amount of space allotted to System Restore. This will remove older restore
points, how many depends on how much space you require for a point, and how
much space you leave.

3) Control Panel/System/System Restore tab, click the "turn off system
restore on all drives" box. This will eliminate all restore points. Once
reenabled, the system will begin creating new ones. You should reboot
inbetween doing this.

Rick,

Thanks for the quick reply. I had attempted to use the
methods that you suggested, however, I think that the
issue is that the _Restore folder contents are the
remnants of my ME installation (compressed restore
files), while now under XP (after my update) the restore
information is located in a different location within the
Windows\Systems folder.

The methods that you outlined (and I had previously
attempted to use) seem to only (I guess logically) affect
the XP restore information. There is no impact on the
files within the C:\_restore\ folder. I want to attempt
to elminate this as it is approximately 2.9G and appears
to have compressed virus signatures within.

Any thought? Thanks!

Hi,

If they are the older _restore folders from WinME, then yes, you can just
delete them.
