As long as the BIOS supports it. For example, there are Asus
boards, where a newer model processor won't POST if you use
an older BIOS. In this example, to run an Opteron dual core 185,
you need the most recent BIOS in there first. Some makers
choose not to support the use of all S939 Opterons.

It is possible that the motherboard maker, knows their Vcore regulator
isn't strong enough, or there is some other compatibility issue
they are aware of, or don't know how to fix.

But as far as the socket itself goes, there shouldn't be any
damage from plugging a S939 processor into an S939 socket.
