Hi!

By the way that I am new here, what do you think?

Is it reasonable to go for a 915/925 system at this time? I used to have a 865PE based system with a 2.6 HT(Northwood) with 512MB RAM and 5600FX. Now I want to get me a new system.

Do you think the 915/925 boards are ripe for use yet? Is it worth investing in them?

The THG reviews are kind of undecisive.

If I go for the 9xx family, wouldn't the 925 be a little stupid as it only supports DDR2? I mean I won't have any option with it...

I would answer your question... But i dont have a clue what you are talking about (i can only help is you are talking about laptop components)

well! That's just as fine. What laptop would you recommend say around 1200-1600 USD???

I don't do americans! i can gie you a good laptop for £1,600 (The one i got, Dell inspiron 510m)

It's comments like these that get under my skin ... you really don't want to get on my wrong side. If you do not have a constructive answer then don't make one.

erebon, as an AMD man myself I don't have an answer for you, lost touch with Intel for some time now ... Ian or one of the other Intel users will better serve your questions.

:)

My advice to you would be to wait a while untill the new LGA775 systems with DDR2 are actually better than Northwood systems.

DDR2 can only run at CAS4 currently meaning the memory is slow compareed to CAS2 in DDR RAM.

Also wait for the X800 to drop in price and i reckon that in not too long you can have a kickass system for much less money.

tis my opinion.

KGB - For future reference the up to minute exchange rates are at www.xe.com

Yup... That's actually what I thought. BUT WAITING IS SO HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARD! *runs off screaming*

*comes back, panting*
Well, I think you are fully right Chris.
Now going off-topic, I never used AMD before. Somehow I can't imagine building on AMD platforms... Do you have any Idea when AMD will come up with DDR2?

AMD will support DDR2 when it makes sense
- When DDR2-667 is introduced and performance advances enough to overcome the DDR2 latency penalty
- When the DDR2 price premium fades

Unconfirmed Quote from AMD

Latency is the significant negative performance issue with DDR2 for now; performing at 4.4.4 are pretty crap when you consider DDR can achieve 2.2.2 ... and the price, well, forget it.

I hope I'm wrong in that I see it going the way Rambus went ... crap and far too costly.

I don't think you'll see anything from AMD until 2005/2006; it will instead probably concentrate on its lead in 64bit.

Your current system is not that bad!!

as time goes on, speeds increase and prices drop :)

you could just go all out and buy a FX-53 and 2Gb ram and an X800XT..... that should do you a LONG while!

WUT'D U DO WIT UR OLD COMPUTER,cuz i'm in desperate needs fo a new 1 4 cheap and the computer u hav now isn't bad at all,u don't need a new computer every year(unless ur rich)(4 example,i've had mine 4 al ost 6 years now and not dat i wanted it dat long) and u don't hav 2 git a whole new system,u can jus upgrade

its to do with compatibility and price and availiabilty of the components.

i dont think that you should make comments about things like the above - just my opinion.

my current system USED TO BE not bad... I don't own it anymore.

Sigh. I will see what I can do.

It was stolen! Don't ask me how, that's a long long story. And by the way I don't live anywhere near UK. In fact I live in Iran(NOT IraQ)

awesome - your guy piy picked up gold in taikwondo if i remember rightly :)

Where do you get all you components from then?

They are all available in huge computer shops. As most are manufactured in Taiwan people just ship them in legally, with the global price...

thats cool...

...I don't know too much about Iranian business...lol

are you Iranian by nationality? or just living there?

wow! thats awesome - your English and grammar are very good (im assuming english isnt the official language of Iran...)

whats it like in Iran - iv'e never been there

My good English is thanks to Tolkien, I'm a huge fan(LONG LOGN before the movie). Plus I am rather talented in language learning... And no English is not the official language. It is FARSI.

Well, it's quite different from what you might think. For example it's not as rigid and unbearable(from the freedom point of view) as the PR tries to tell people in Europe and US.
There are difficulties of course, but yet there are some nice things to. Our appartment for example is much larger than the one we lived in in Germany. And you should consider that my father is now retired but in Germany he was teaching in University. And that the average home IS larger than in Europe, though not US. It is around 100-200 square meters. Please don't ask me about square feet. ;)
One bad thing is that the social security is not as good and the per-head-income is much less than Europe.
Well, but I like it here. I recently visited India and Nepal and I found that people there have a much worse life than Iranians.
