I think you will have to give a more detailed explanation of what you mean,
and why you need help, before someone in this group can help you.

Hello,
Thank You for replying.
KB 905747 was installed thru the use of MS Auto Update.
Control Panel - add or remove programs list.
When KB905747 is clicked on for removal the following appears: "this update
cannot be removed".
Has anyone removed KB 905747 thru the use of the registry editor?
Will it"s removal "using the registry editor" cause a problem for the
operating system?
Will the removal create a problem when using MS Auto Update?
take care.

My reason for asking you to expand your question was to encourage others who
are more expert than me to see it and to respond.

I have looked in my updates for the number you mention and I can find
KB905474, which says it cannot be removed, but I do not see KB905747. Are you
certain of the number you gave?

The one I have is to do with Windows Genuine Advantage. It says it is to do
with ascertaining whether or not your copy of Windows XP is or is not a
legitimate copy. I am afraid MS has put it on my machine to benefit
themselves not to be of any benefit to me. I believe that once a
non-removable hotfix has been added by MS it is not removable save by
reformatting.

In any case why do you want to remove it?

MS says:
"You cannot use Add or Remove Programs to remove the notifications. You can
temporarily disable Windows Genuine Advantage Notification Prompts. To do
this, right-click the Notifier icon in the notification area and select
Change Notification Settings. Then, follow the prompts. This will disable the
Notification Prompts until a new release of the Notification Update is
released."

If you can see a notification icon on your desktop, it is an indication that
your copy of Windows XP may not be genuine. I do not see such an icon,
because my copy is genuine.

Alternatively, you may have a download of an update KB905747, but I cannot
see such an update myself.

Tonyo,

Has WGA worked for you in a limited user account? It has never for me
and I still need to verify my OS by using the manual download of the
tool before I can get new downloads. A real pain n the a*se.

I have not bothered to install it for now. I understand it is voluntary
and so I don't need it unless it works as designed!

Hello,
Sorry number transposition, should be kb905474.
MS stated at this time it is a trial program.
After reading MS information and FAQ, I was interested in the program and if
it was integrated into the OS or a basic registry entry that could be removed.
Found the registry entry and wanted to know if anyone had removed the entry
and what were the consequences.

I just have the one administrator account. But the question P A Bear asks is
what I am also interested in hearing about.
