8gb system disk limit?

Does XP have an 8gb limit on the system disk, and if so is there a way to
get round it?

I just expanded my system partition from 8 to 18gb (it kept filling up)
using partition manager 8.0, but now when I try to boot it says "A disk read
error has occurred". Just wondering if this is because it has increased
over 8gb and isn't being recognised or if PM8 has just screwed it up...

No.

If the BIOS has that limit, your system is that old that running WinXP
on it is not a good idea anyway. However, there are BIOS updates avai-
lable in most cases.

You may want to contact the PM Tech support since this is not a Windows
issue.

No, there hasn't been any such limit since the days of WinNT.

As Partition Manager should have warned you, resizing a system
partition often results in an unbootable situation. You should be able
to simply boot from the WinXP installation disk and use the Recovery
Console to repair the boot sector.

If that fails, I hope that you had any important data backed up, as
your only recovery may require a repartitioning and reinstallation.

No. In fact, it's a very rare person running XP who has it installed on a
drive or partition anywhere near that small. It should be much larger for
almost everyone--usually at least 10-20GB. On my three machines here, it is
(or was) installed on a partition of 80GB, 60GB, and 100GB.

I'm not familiar with "partition manager." Do you mean "Partition Magic"?

Regardless of what program you use, problems like this sometimes occur. I'm
not sure why--whether it's the fault of the software or the user--but it's
by no means uncommon. They usually work, but not always. That's why all of
them always warn you to make a backup before beginning.
 
Thats the first 1024 sector/8GB (real CHS) limit. Doesn't apply to XP.
You might try a mbr or boot partition repair using the XP install CD.
