Use Windows XP, media center edition, sp3. Card reader works with regular
micro card but not hc type. Is there a fix for this?

Purchase a card reader that supports it... This is not likely to be an OS
issue.

My laptop has a slot to put in the card directly. The adapter came with the
micro card. The adaptor and slot both work with a smaller capacity micro sd
card that I had in the house but the 8 gb card is just not seen. There are
no error messages.

First - the slot in your laptop may/may not be able to utilize that card.
Depends on its specifications - check with the laptop manufacturer.

Second - you say there is an adapter that came with the 8GB SD HC card? And
you installed the adapters drivers into Windows XP?

How about some details?

- Laptop make/model (specific, please.)
- 8GB SD HC card make/model (specific please.)
- Adapter that came with the 8GB SD HC card make/model (specific please.)
- Operating system edition, service pack level, version and architecture
type.
(like: Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3 (version: 5.1 build
2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090804-1435 : Service Pack 3) 32-bit architecture.)

You could have a few different "Media Center" versions - that's why I am
asking.

Yeah, well....the built-in card readers that come with laptops are not
necessarily perfect. On my Toshiba Satellite, the built-in reader
appeared to read the SD chip from my wife's camera, but when we
displayed the images they were garbled. No error messages, just trash
instead of pictures.

So we got an inexpensive USB card reader. Works beautifully.

The original reply was correct. Even with the the Micro SD to SD
adapter, the internal "electronics" of the SDHC card are different.
You must have a SDHC compatible reader. Both the SD and SDHC cards
have the physical same size and it is the "internal" components work
differently on the SDHC card to permit more storage.

Sorry about that. OS is Win XP MCE Ver 2002 SP3. Laptop is HP Pavilion
dv8300t custom ordered July 2006. Card is Kingston micro SDHC with a
Kingston micro SD adapter that fits into the computer's SD slot. I also
tried a USB card reader with no success. My older 256 MB micro SD card is
seen by the computer using the Kingston adapter or USB reader. I found an
article by MS for a hotfix for this exact problem but it was for Win XP SP2.
I tried to install it anyway and it said my files were newer because I have
SP3. Info on SP3 said it fixed the problem but I'm now assuming the computer
is the limiting factor. My Verizon ENV Touch phone can see the Kingston
micro card and can copy photos to it so I know the card is not the problem.
I've been reading about this on the hp website and now believe the
limitation is the card slot on the computer. I'm going to buy a 2 gb micro
card (not hc) and should be OK with that.

Hi Bobbi,

I have a HP Pavilion dv8100cto and had the same problem. If you call
Microsoft, they will give you a link to a driver for the TI card reader
in your machine (note that the link is only good for 24 hours). The call
is free and if you quote their knowledgebase article number (don't
remember the number. You can search for it on the Microsoft site), they
don't even ask for a credit card number.

Sincerely,

Read my other reply! The "physical" size of both the SD and SDHC
cards are exactly the same, including the micro SD. It is the
"internal" electronics that are different in the HC cards in order to
"pack" more storage space. Because of this difference, you need to
have a SDHC compatible reader, eventough the microSD to SD adapter
will work in any SD reader.

It should be noted that the SDHC reader will read all "smaller" SD
cards.

May not be a driver problem. I had an external card reader, atech,
which had the same problem; the 256 mb, 1 g & 2 g were recognized;
no luck with the 4 gig.

Went to the atech's website & found that my model cannot do above 2 gig;
I did get the card-reader around 2006.

Did some research to find which card-reader can read memory cards above
4 gig & got one; the lower prices of card-readers helped alot.

microSD cards above 2GB are microSDHC cards. microSD and microSDHC
card appear and have the same physical size but the "internal"
electronics are completely different.

I had this prob with 4gb and 8gb, I found that if you first try load on a laptop or your phone, they may read the card, if so, put one song onto the card, then you can use the card as normal. Hope it works for you. stonyboy.
