Does XP have an 8gb limit on the system disk, and if so is there a way to
get round it?

I just expanded my system partition from 8 to 18gb (it kept filling up)
using partition manager 8.0, but now when I try to boot it says "A disk read
error has occurred". Just wondering if this is because it has increased
over 8gb and isn't being recognised or if PM8 has just screwed it up...

No such limit
Visit your hd manu web site, download/create their disk checking utility
Or if the sys doesnt boot try a repair installation of win

there's nothing physically wrong with the disk.

also, when i try boot from cd into XP setup it recognises the 50gb data
partition on the disk (correctly identified as NTFS) and also recognises the
18gb system partition - but lists it as unknown.

what is the best way to attempt recovery of the partition (before wiping it
and starting again)?

How do you know theres nothing physically wrong?

It would seem something went wrong with you PM process, so unless you
created the PM recovery disk, there is probably no resolution that doesnt
involve deleting the partition using the winxp cd, recreating and installing
winxp

PS Cross post if you must, not multipost

The 8GB limit on the boot partition would be for a late 90's machine.

(I actually forget the actual size numbers. There was a 4GB limit and
I forget what followed.)

Get the make and model for the disk and go and download the test
utility from the manufacturer's website. (sometimes refered to as the
"drive fitness test"
