Dad has a new Dell computer with a 2 GB Celeron processor and 256 MB of RAM.
It is slow to load and slow to perform simple tasks. I've checked Startup
and I've disabled bunches of services according to Black Viper's
instructions. He does have 811493 showing in Add/Remove. I have researched
this because I know that it's a known problem, but what I don't know is if
all 811493's are "bad" or if the it was fixed and still has the same
number...? Should I have him uninstall it and then run Windows Update
again?

TIA

Pam

Carey, thanks. So, if he has version 5.1.2600.1151 rather than version of
5.1.2600.108, it means he has the good version of 811493--right?

Hi

The 5.1.2600.108 version is for computers without SP1 (Win XP Gold / SP0), and
those never had a problem with this update, so the revised update delivers the
same files as for the original update (files dated 12-Dec-2002).

It is the 5.1.2600.1150 version for WinXP SP1 that caused trouble, and it was
updated to 5.1.2600.1151 in the revised update (files dated 24-Apr-2003).

So if your dad has version 5.1.2600.1151 rather than version 5.1.2600.1150, it
means he has the good version of 811493.

If he has the files with version 5.1.2600.1150, you will find download links to
the revised update in the link that Carey provided, just download and run the
update manually (you do not need to remove the old one first).

811493 is difficult to uninstall - and especially if you have installed
later fixes. The original one was superseded by a new version to cure
the problem at the end of May 2003. If it was obtained later than that
- or if you have installed the cumulative security patches at
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;826939
it is not likely that this is the trouble. (If you are unsure about
826939 I would go to that page and use the 'Download 826939 package now'
about a quarter of the way down, to make sure it has been implemented
comprehensively)

Dear Alex,
Thank you. He apparently had the correct version of 811493, but as far as I
could tell over the phone, he did not have 826939. It took a while, but I
think we finally got it installed. I had him check Add/Remove before and
after and it was there after. Let's hope it helps! I also had him run
Defrag. I hope to hear that performance speeds up because the machine is
slow as molasses on ice.

Dear Torgier,
Thank you. He apparently had the correct version of 811493, but I had him
install the roll-up just in case. I'll post back with any news about how it
affects performance, if at all. It might take a few days to find out.

Hi

His performance problems can also be caused by a unwanted guest (trojan, worm,
virus, spyware, parasites).

Is he running an antivirus program with updated virus signature files?

Also, most spyware and parasites are not detected by most antivirus program, you
need specialized programs for this. See here for more information on this:

Torgeir, thanks. He runs EZ antivirus, Spybot, and AdAware. There is no
question that he is susceptible. :-\ I might try puttin ZoneAlarm on his
system, but there is a tolerance level to consider in terms of having to
make decisions about what to allow and what to disallow, etc.. He likes EZ,
seems to marginally understand it, and enjoys updating. I set it to run a
scan every 24 hours, and I think I set it to update automatically.

I will review the articles that you reference and point what I can in Dad's
direction!

Thanks.
Pam
