802.11b connection problems (laptop->desktop)

I have a laptop with a wi-fi card, and a desktop with a wi-fi card.
The laptop is an acer travelmate 290, the desktop is a random assortment
of pieces with a belkin 802.11b pci card installed. PC is using XP pro,
the laptop has XP home.

They connect to each other, or both register each other's presence on
the network, with signal strength varying by distance, as you would
expect, but they completely fail to communicate.

The PC is a satellite of the home network, which is set up
'net connection -> server pc (XP ICS) -> hub -> all the other pcs
(ethernet connections all around, here).

I want my laptop to be able to connect to the network through my
pc (which is one of the 'all the other pcs'), and to the internet.

Main problem seems to be that when I bridge the ethernet and wireless
connections on my PC, the wireless connection loses access to the
tcp/ip protocol, which makes it effectively useless. I can't add
protocols to it individually, because it's bridged, and it won't let
me, and in the bridge's settings, the tcp/ip stuff is configured just
fine. Support tab of the wireless connection on my PC says that
all the tcp/ip details are unavailable.

Is there any reason why XP has disabled tcp/ip on the wireless
connection, is there any way to fix it while keeping it bridged,
and is ICS from a machine on the other side of a network accessible
over a bridge?

If any more details are needed, please tell me, and I'll post them.

Some wireless cards just can not be bridged, that is, they fail to transparently forward
packets with source MAC address not their.
Use only ICS or IP masquerading on them.

Are there known issues with either Belkin cards or the Intel wireless
component in my laptop?
