64k limit in file open dialog!?!

This is year 2006. XP can handle 4 Gigs of RAM. Then, why the heck does it
limit the file name string in the file open dialog to 64k? In the 8.3 /
seg:ofs days that (maybe) made sense, but certainly not any more - it makes
selecting a big bunch of files impossible.

What's the logic?

When will it be changed? It really shouldn't be that hard to fix, should it?

I can't really comprehend any situation where you would want to
simultaneously that many files, but I suppose it could exist.

I am actually surpised that it will accept that much. I would have
expected it to be limited to something near the maximum allowable file
name plus path length for a single file.

It seems to me that allowing up to 64K of data in an open dialog might
be an exploitable vulnerability. Certainly an unlimited data size
would be.
