640x480 mode in XP -- does this work???

I recently got a new DELL with XP home addition installed,
only seems to work in safe mode. The monitor is an ole E
Machine with a limit of 640x480 -- any clues on this one.
I set the display properties for this setting but
everytime I do a "normal" boot the screen goes blank and
the amber light comes on after the starting Windows XP
banner. Do I need to get a new monitor???

You can press F8 on startup and select VGA mode. It will do until you can
afford a new monitor!
