The regukar 32-bit version works fine. You don't need the 64-bit version,
but without it, you really don't don't get any extra benefit from the 64-bit
CPU.

You do not have to buy the 64 bit system. It will run just fine. (Well, it
has when tested here at any rate.)

It depends on the 64-bit machine. If it can run 32-bit code (like the
AMD Opterons) then the 32-bit OS will be fine. If it will run only
64-bit code (like Intel Itanium, IIRC), then you'll need the 64-bit
version of WinXP.

Ken;

It depends upon the CPU. If it is an AMD64 CPU, it has the memory
controller on-die, has direct connect architecture, and supports the
Hypertransport bus. These hardware level enhancements will work in 32 bit
as well as 64 bit, and the OS and/or application does not have to be aware
of it. Apps like Photoshop will run much faster on a AMD64 running the 32
bit version of windows than it will on the Intel EM64T chips, that don't
have the on-die memory controller, DCA, or Hypertransport bus.

Actually, it depends upon the the specific type of 64-bit CPU that
you use.

Intel's Itanium and Itanium II CPUs are 64-bit CPUs that will
support only a very specific version of 64-bit WinXP Pro. These CPUs
will not support any 32-bit operating system

However, if you use AMD's Athlon64 or Intel's newer EM64T CPUs, you
can still use a 32-bit OS, if necessary or desired.
