I know a lot of this has been covered but I would like to clarify. As an
average home user with Office 2007 and some games, should I go with the 64 or
32 bit install? I have an Athlon 64 x2 with 2 GB of memory at present.
Thanks for your help.

As an "average" user I would have to say 32bit is your best option. You
only need 64bit if you actually have 64bit applications. Even having large
memory requirements isn't a "need" with work arounds.

Stick with 32bit as you will find even with 32bit some apps won't work or
you have to contact the vendor and keeo in mind you will have a shorter list
of apps you can use in a 64bit environment.

My choice sould be: a multiboot with both systems. Take the best
of two worlds.

Unless you need more than 4gb of memory, or have programs that are only
available in 64-bit flavors, stick with 32-bit. Much easier to find drivers
for 32-bit Vista (and XP) than 64-bit. There is no significant advantage to
64-bit over 32-bit OSes except for the two special cases I mentioned first.

Office 2007 is a 32-bit program period. Almost all games are 32-bit at this
point. As well, 64-bit Windows may have more compatibility issues (finding
drivers etc. etc.). To really take advantage of 64-bit capabilities you'd
have to have *over* 4GB of RAM installed etc. etc.

So, probably, you should go 32-bit for the time being. Those who actually
need 64-bit Windows already know and wouldn't ask.
