Sure, go here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/evaluation/trial.mspx

There's some things to fill in and then they'll send you the CD. There
is a shipping and handling charge* so they'll ask for a credit card.

This is a 120 trial version, that gives you time to make sure it will
work with all your hardware and software and, after 120 days, it should
be readily available for purchase from the usual sources for OEM
software.

*I've been told the charge is about $7 in the US and $12 for other
countries, does anyone know if that's correct?

I don't believe Microsoft is offering the trial version any longer.

Since so many hardware devices are not supported and since there's
quite a bit of software not yet available I'd sure get the trial
version and dual boot with Windows XP before trading my XP copy for
X64.

When you know that all your hardware and software will work (or will
have to be replaced), then and only then would I trade. Remember, once
you make the trade you can't trade back AFAIK...

It's showing up as $20 from the UK. Yet to order. It's an awful sting. I
vote for downloadable version, so much easier.

There are many who agree with you, maybe if enough request it it might
happen?

Is your computer (motherboard) 64bit compatible, including your
processor? Not all are.

Hi

I posted this query due to the fact that the microsoft US website was
offering the trial version but I got the impression it wasn't available here
but I could import it. I was wondering if there was another source for this
trail software even though microsoft are not offering it anymore. If there
is no other source can you tell me as and when there might be other chances
to trail the software.

Many thanks

Lee

Hi Martin.

The download should be in the form of a '.iso' file. You burn this file to
disc and the disc becomes a bootable installation disc just like the discs
provided for other OS. Once burnt insert the disc into your CD/DVD drive and
restart your machine. After POST there should be an option to boot from A
different location than the hard drive. (This is 'F8' on my machine.) Select
your CD/DVD drive and then follow the on screen instructions. The XP64bit
System should then be installed onto your machine.

Sorry for piggy backing on this post, but I figure I might get someone
knowledgeable about 64 bit XP Pro here.

I have been having some rather disappointing problems with games on Windows
64 bit XP Pro. Aside from some of my normal programs not working on the 64
bit platform almost any game I play seems to cause my computer to lock up
after a few minutes of play. The two games I have had serious and consistent
problems with are Command and Conquer Generals (with 1.07 patch) and Half
Life 2. In either game I can either let it run on the opening screen for
maybe 5 minutes and the computer will lock up, or I can try to play a game in
which case lock up occurs much more rapidly. The screen looks normal, just no
response from the computer. The audio will also stick to whatever the last
noise was prior to lockup. An oddity was Counterstrike Source in which I
could run the video stress test (a very good 140’s average fps) and could
even run the game for quite a while with no problems.

I tried a copy of 32 bit windows XP Pro and it seemed to work fine, just a
little slower. I reformatted and reinstalled my 64bit copy and am still
having the same game problems.

I have found very inconsistent response online so far, i.e. some people have
horrible problems with 64 bit and some have none. My hardware is listed
below. If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated
(including telling me if Windows will do a return/exchange with me for 32 bit
if nothing works out). On these lines can I install Windows 32 bit XP Pro
that I got on a Dell if I contact Microsoft (it did not come with the actual
Windows cd so I am guessing not, but figured I would ask).

My temps have been normal (degrees Celcius): Mobo in low 40’s, CPU in 30’s,
Video card in low 50’s high 40’s.

Thanks for the help.

Try the microsoft.public.windows.64bit.general newsgroup - I'm sure if
anyone has, they would know there, at least there's a better chance to find
out there.
