I posted a message on this topic August 24, but got no
replies so far. I failed to note that this problem halts
installation of XP. I'm stuck until we get it resolved.

I cannot find any reference to this error on the KB. I
thought all error messages were documented????

The message says to contact Microsoft Technical support,
but to do that you have to agree to sign up for Passport
if you want to correspond with them. I refuse to put my
privat financial information in the hands of Microsoft, a
company that has proven they cannot safeguard computers,
not users, not even their own.

Advice?

Thanks,
Rich Collins

Unfortunately there is not enough information here to go on. The 514ff588h
looks like a generic memory address. Do you have more information to go on?
Is this a clean install or an upgrade over another OS. At what phase of the
installation does this error occur?:
1. At the very beginning of the file copy/load process?
2. At the first reboot?
3. At the gui mode and what phase of the gui mode.
Because the answers to these questions are, thus far, unavailable I will
speculate on the general causes below. Please keep in mind that this is
speculation based on a lack of sufficient information.

If you recieve a fatal error during the text mode portion of setup this is
always either bad/misconfigured hardware or bad installation media.

If you recieve this error during an upgrade of another os run MSCONFIG and
disable all third party services and startup applications and perform the
upgrade again. This will generally resolve it. If it does not fix it then
suspect bad memory. If you do suspect bad memory then the easy way to
resolve this is to switch out memory with another system. If that is not an
option try pulling out any memory absolutely not needed. IF the problem
persists then pull that memory out and replace it with the ram you removed.
The reason for this being such a high suspect has to do with memory mapped
io and how it can alter files during/after their commit to disk.

If you recieve this error during the gui mode on a clean install check your
hardware for compatibility and consider the memory tests given in the
paragraph above.

Please consider these things and if they do not resolve the issue for you
please submit greater detail on the error and the circumstances/environment
leading up to it.
