I have a Dell Inspiron 4150. It runs Windows XP
professional with 512MB RAM. I check the available
physical memory and it only reads about 298MB of RAM. My
basic programs like Microsoft Word, Frontpage, and Winamp
are slow to start and use. How can I get more of my
memory commited to these programs I need to use?

Windows will use the amount of memory necessary. Look somewhere else for
your slow operation, like disk cleanup and defrag.

have you checked for spyware? spy-bot or ad aware are
good software for this and they are free.

Hey Duane,

If you're looking in task manger, then Available is synonomous with FREE,
Not in use !

It doesn't mean total ever available.

Check in control panel/system/general tab under Computer, you should see
512MB.

The memory really available is the sum of physical memory + pagefile -
Kernel

This is what is shown under Commit Charge, its not an exact sum, there must
be some overheads in there somewhere that aren't shown.

As long as peak remains reasonably below limit, then you're ok.

Paul
