I installed (2) 256 modules DDR of ram into my Intel board. When I boot up,
it shows only 496 MB.

Where did the 16MB go?

Shared video for the on-board graphics.

I have an Intel Extreme Graphics 2. If I add additional memory, how much
more can I expect additional memory to be allocated to this?

Let me ask another question. So, if I purchase an AGP 8x Nvidia video card
that has 128MB of Ram.

Does that mean I can expect this video card to deduct 128MB of memory from
my original memory?

NO, the video cards you add to the motherboard slot have the memory built
onto them. It is just that when the computer manufacturer's add video to
the motherboard, they give a part to the video card and let the system have
the rest.

I do not know! Your system should have a setting in the BIOS to control the
size of the video RAM part.

Up to 64 MB, right click on the graphics icon, looks like a
blue screen (in system tray) or open the graphics by right
clicking on the desktop and selecting properties, then
settings/ advanced. Here is what mine shows.

No, if you install an AGP (or a PCI) card it and its VRAM
will provide all the video RAM and all the installed system
RAM (the S in SDRAM means synchronized dynamic random access
memory) will be released for system use.

Probably your video is being done with an on-board video chip, rather
than a separate cars. and it is using 16 MB of main memory

OK, thanks Jim.

If I increase from 16MB to 64MB, what noticeable changes will I expect to
see?

It depends on what you are showing on the screen, the more
RAM available, the faster the screen can be re-drawn, images
will just snap change at full screen, rather than"flow" in ,
but for Office text and math operations you might not see
much difference.
