I reset my BIOS to defaults, replaced RAM Modules, still
cannot get XP to run when I have 512 M RAM in memory
sockets. Spent hours on the phone with HP and Microsoft
and still no fix. Computer ran with no problem with 512
RAM and Windows ME. Works fine at on XP with 384, 256,
and 128 RAM. Is there a hero in the audience that can
lend a hand?
Computer HP Pavilion 7850
RAM Crucial technologies 256M 133MHZ unbuffered

Try a memory diagnostics

Memtest86 - http://memtest86.com
DocMemory - http://simmtester.com

If it passes, then I'm not sure what to say
If it doesn't pass, try mixing and matching your ram sticks to see if the
problem is your ram, or the memory slots on the motherboard or your
motherboard.
