Does partitioning help me get around the 48-bit LBA/137GB large hard disk
capacity barrier? Thanks.

No.

The Operating system needs to see the entire disk. This is done by
installing WinXP SP1.
I don't see why

I can see my two 160Gb drives, and I haven't got SP1 installed

Mark:

Do a search for the file - Atapi.sys

When found....
Right Click on the file and report back the version.

Well since you failed to reply...

You most likely installed a pre-SP1 patch that updated Atapi.sys to work w/48bit LBA.
WinXP SP1 rolled all pre-SP1 updates into WinXP SP1 therefore that is the preferred way to
fix the problem.

I cannot in my wildest dreams imagine what I could put on a PC to even
begin to use 320GB, (legally that is)

Easy....

Very large databases.
6.3 or greater megapixel JPEGs
MOV, AVI or other Digital Video files

That's good for a start.

I do. As a photographer, I routinely scan slides to .TIFF files, each of
which vary between 20MB and 80MB, depending on the resolution quality
desired. Customers would have a tough time making a life size portrait from
a 2MB JPEG.

I presume you are in the USA from your posting time (-5:00 GMT), but here
in the UK I don't live with my nose glued to the pc screen, I have another

Version is ATM 5.1.2600.0.

Video Capture

PC Games (each one is about 1Gb-1.5Gb now days)

That's the min. version for LBA. Like I said, you installed a pre-SP1 update.

And you're Tony Troll, the all seeing, all knowing expert on what we all do
for a living. Get a life dork. You don't know me, or anyone else here for
that matter.

With fair use rights, I can put anything on my HDD for my convenience,
therefore nothing would be illegal (with regards to how I acquire the
material), except certain content that in itself would be illegal, no
matter where I got it.

If a person does much video editing or rendering, then they can very
easily use 320GB of disk space.

Also, most *current* OEM CDs of Windows XP (Home or Professional) are SP1
slipstreamed variants which therefore don't need the pre-SP1 ATAPI patch for
larger HDs.

These slipstreamed versions of XP are *required* if any of the following are
true:

1. You have a hard drive larger than 137 GB that is not SCSI.
2. You have a Serial ATA hard drive (regardless of size).
3. You have any of the following Intel Pentium 4 processors: 2600C/2600E,
2800C/2800E, 3060B/3000C/3000E, 3200C/3200EE/3200E, 3400E/3400E-EE/3400EE.

Ask your dealer about OEM Windows XP Home/Professional including SP1 when
buying any of the above items.
