I want to download Vista but I don't know which one to download. I suppose
that it is the 32-bit edition but could someone please confirm. I have a
Vaio VGN T270P running Windows XP Pro Service pack 2.

Thank you for confirming but could you please tell me where can I find this
info in my machine?

If your machine doesn't have stickers on it touting "64 bit processor", then
you likely have 32bit.
You would know from the invoice. You would know because you specced a 64bit
processor.
You would have had to - in the past - gone out and purposely bought a 64 bit
processor.
It would have been a selling point and a purchasing point. If none of that
rings a bell - then at this point - you are fairly certain you have a 32bit
processor.

Otherwise - you look it up in the manual or online..

Particularly:

Where you can even get the "Marketing Specifications"...

If it doesn't say 64 bit or dual-core (or similar wording) - it isn't.

Thank you very much for this and especially for the links. Most
appreciated. I tried to find the specs online but, as my laptop is 1 year
old, it is not anymore in Sony's online catalog .

Excellent. It is exactly what I was looking for: msinfo32. I had forgotten
about that. Thank you very much.

If you don't know whether you have 64-bit or 32-bit hardware, then you
have 32-bit hardware. You would not have acquired 64-bit hardware
without knowing about it.

A few months ago - I would have agreed with you.

But with the number of 64 bit capable systems out there now - someone could
have a dual-core processor (and thus have the ability to run 64 bit OS/apps)
and never know they have essentially a 64 bit system.

Dual core does not necessarily mean 64-bit. There are plenty of 32-bit
dual core systems. All it means is that there are two CPUs on a single
chip, those CPUs could be either 32-bit or 64-bit.

True, but my point is simply this:

Someone could now easily order - without knowing it - a 64-bit capable
system without the 64 bit OS or anything else.
They do not necessarily know they have a 64-bit capable system. It is very
easy to do from some vendors, like Dell.

Several people have already answered your question, but I'll throw in a word
of caution: Windows Vista doesn't exist yet. What exists is a *Beta* version
of Windows Vista If you don't know what "Beta" means, it's a test version,
one that is released to people to test it so problems can be identified and
fixed. The reason it's a beta version and not a released version is that it
still has such problems.

Is this a spare system that you don't rely on for normal use, or are you
planning on replacing a working copy of XP with a beta version of Vista on
your only machine. If the latter (and from your question, my guess is that
it is), you're playing with fire.

I have a test laptop that I use to test all the beta versions that can get a
hold of. I am presently playing with Office 2007 and IE7, amongst others.
Thank you for your concern.

Great! Then that's fine.

Thank you for your concern.

You're welcome.
