When I open Excel I find that three files are loaded. Two are backups of my
address books and the third is a special diagnostic file I created.
I can open a new file OK but would like to get rid of these files opening.
How do I do this?

Look under tools>options>general and "at startup open all files in:" if they
are in one folder
Also find a folder called xlstart and see if the files might be there

Move them out of your XLSTART directory. In XL2002, if you go to
Tools/Options/General, you find a text box labeled "At startup, open all files
in". They must be in that directory. Move them somewhere else.

Thanks for you help
The folder did have two files in it but they were not any of the 3 files but
I deleted them. No change
Under tools>options>general I could find no "at startup open all files in"
The 3 files in question were created as a backup to my address book and also
a diagnostic I had to create for sending to a supplier of software
Any further ideas?

You could find no "at startup, open all files in" dialog box or there was no
path in the dialog box?

Older versions of Excel used the term "Alternate startup file location".

Do you see that term?

Another suggestion..........

It is possible and highly likely for you to have more than one XLSTART folder.

Do a search for XLSTART. See what is in each one you find.

Under tools>options>general
Then look for "Sheets in new workbook"
You can change it from 1 to 255

I think you have misunderstood. I can open blank sheets all right. I just
don't like to see these 3 sheets at the startup. In actual fact I only see
one because I click new and a blank sheet is loaded

Did you have a crash, so that these may be files created by AutoRecovery? Have
you searched for each of the file names to see how many copies you have? If
there are extras, in strange directories that you don't understand, delete
them.

I have not seen your full thread but have you tried Select All and then Format
Column,Unhide or Format, Row, Unhide?

Thanks for you help.
I tried that but no difference. However it gave me a clue and after many
tries I managed to delete the 3 files
