thricipio said:Thanks for the response, Russ. I'll try to do better in the future...
starting right now:
I'm using MSO Outlook® 2007 (12.0.6514.5000) with SP2 MSO
(12.0.6425.1000),
Part of Microsolft Office Basic 2007.
On the main Microsoft Outlook screen, the following key sequence
(Alt)-key (menu bar) » (T)-key (Tools) » (B)-key (Address Book) brings me
to
a window that says "Address Book: Contacts" in the title bar. You
mentioned
that OL doesn't have an address book, and I believe you. But clearly, one
is
accessible via the above key sequence.
Actually, my OL Contacts folder has no contacts per sé in it — just
several
other contact folders (e.g., Business, Work, Family, Friends, etc.). In
each
of these folders' Properties, I've marked the checkbox that reads, “Show
this
folder as an e-mail Address Book†so, if I use the dropdown arrow provided
in
the Address Book dialogue window, I can select one of these.
So far, so good. My problem *was* that this window seemed to be for
searching and not displaying the entire contents of the particular address
book in question. The dialogue seems to suggest that I can search the
address book's "Name [field] only" or alternately, I can search "More
columns." The latter's radio button seems to be the default selection and
prior to my previous post, I didn't bother selecting "Name only" because I
didn't want to search; I just wanted to see the entire contents.
As it turns out, selecting "Name only" has the effect of displaying the
entire contents. I discovered this inadvertently, and came back to this
newsgroup to mention that I've found my answer. That's when I read your
post
(below). So, this post accomplishes that original goal *and* responds to
your reply to my original post.
As a little background... I'm not new to OL, but quite new to anything
past
OL·2000, which is what I was using until my laptop crashed just before New
Years Day. I've been rebuilding my software platform, and in the process
have updated my MSO software from 2000 to 2007. As one might imagine,
I've
hit upon a few items of inquiry as part of my transition. So, you'll
probably see a few more posts from me before all is said and done. In
those,
I will endeavor to provide sufficient detail from the outset.
Thanks again for your reply. —Thri

that someone can figure out what you're asking. Outlook does not even
have
an address book so your post requires considerable clarification.
thricipio said:Ahhh... thanks for the reply. I think I went through the trouble of
setting
up the "Address Book" as a carry-over from my OL·2000 experience, in which
(if I recall correctly), one had to "Show [one's contact] folderas an
e-mail Address Book" in order for autoresolve to work in the addressee
fields
when composing an e-mail. I infer from your post that this "linkage" step
is
no longer needed... and autoresolve will work just fine without it.
Please
let me know if my inference is inaccurate.
Thanks again for the reply and for the help. —Thri

Russ Valentine said:The address book you are launching is simply a view of the electronic
addresses in your Contacts Folders. It contain no data. It only displays
electronic addresses. It is an outdated relic that is of little use. If
you
need to search your Contacts, do so in the Contacts Folder instead.

thricipio said:When you say "you must still configure the Outlook Address Book Service,"
are
you referring to the steps I've already taken and described in my previous
post (i.e., marking the checkbox), or some other procedure? I'm half
assuming and completely hoping your answer is "yes." In any case the
steps
I've already taken either worked or are irrelevant and I somehow,
inadvertently configured the OABS. I say this because autoresolve is
definitely working.
Thanks again for the help. —Thri

Russ Valentine said:No. For autoresolution to work, you must still configure the Outlook
Address
Book Service. But for all intents and purposes, autocompletion has
obviated
autoresolution. So between that and the very limited search functions of
the
view, few people find use for the "address book" feature.

If you already followed them and your Outlook Address Book is working, what
exactly was your question?
thricipio said:My question arises from the sad circumstance of my unfamiliarity with some
of
the terminology you use; and my question is exactly this:
In an earlier post I mentioned this step that I went through:
---------------------------------------------------------
[Quote A] “In each of [my Contact] folders' Properties, I've marked the
checkbox that reads, “Show this folder as an e-mail Address Bookâ€
Later, you said:
------------------
[Quote B] “For autoresolution to work, you must still configure the
Outlook
Address Book Service.â€
Is what I described in Quote A the same procedure you make reference to in
Quote B?
