2000 server not logging in

I have a 2000 server with sp4 running exchange server. We
needed to reboot the server and when the server restarted
it is stalling on preparing network connections.

I have tried to change nics, but this doesn't help. I have
also tried to disable the nics and this doesn't resolve
the issue either.

If I leave the system standing for about 20mins I
eventually get to the logon screen, but then I have to
wait another 20mins for it too time out, and it throughs
me back to the crtl alt del screen. I can ping the nic by
name and ip i can't terminal to it.

The server is hanging at the login screen. Can anyone
point me in the right direction to sort this out.
 
WIth Exchange running, it probably takes that long to start up all the
background services. I'd start up in safe mode, turn off as many services
as practical, run Ad-Aware and a virus scanner, then try in normal mode
again.
