I stuck 2 thumb drives into my USB2 ports with the intention of
transferring some files from one to the other. All that happened was
that I got a blue screen. Should I have been able to do this? I ended
up transferring the files from one drive to the deck top & then
transferring them into the second drive.

Can files in thumb drives be password protected? If so how?

BSOD's are almost certainly some broken hardware, or bad driver issue.

There are utilities available to password protect thumb drives. I would try
download.com, or tucows.com

What are BSOD's? Am I correct in assuming that XP should be able to
transfer data from one thumb drive to another?

Blue Screen of Death, a nickname given to windows errors that result in a
debug screen dump. It's a 'picture' of the where the processor was when it
jambed.

Thumb drive files should drag around just like any other windows explorer
folder.
