Hello; My first question is for me. I just installed a new up to date
SOYO motherboard and new P4 Intel Processor. It is a 2.8 gig and the
motherbnoard has all the new bells. Now I noticed after redoing the
install of operating system XP on a new hard drive and reapplying all
the new critical and XP updates and also the latest drivers from the
other components which I had with old system for that one that my
machine freezes after about an hour and half. The screen saver could
be on or I could be in middle of connection and it freezes. A cold
Reboot is the only way out. Almost seemed like the time power saver
was abled but I have them all set to never. Other than that it works
perfect. This motherboard does have a temp control snesor built in but
when checking before or after event it is stable and not overheating
as I updated the power supply and fan to a bigger faster more airflow
model. The temp varies around the 113F mark. Would that be normal. I
never touched the factory default settingts to change them to shut off
if overheating occurs.

The second question is for my friend. He runs XP with Outlook Express
version 6 and he says he cannot delete any mail from his program. Is
there a certain component missing or a setting ticked unaware to him.
Also he said sometimes he mail freezes up and he has to get out and go
back in to work. Seems to be a glitch since these updates for viruses
and the like from Microsoft have been applied. Any ideas on either or
both? Nick

Did you install all the motherboard drivers that came with your M/B,
including the IDE drivers?

After installing them, did you look on the manufacturers web site for
updates to them?

Did you install the latest authorized version of video drivers for your
video board?

Suggest you do so!

Do hardware diagnosis:

1) open the computer and run it open, cleaning out all dust bunnies and
observing all fans (overheating will cause system freezing) - this is
part of the generic testing so I left it in here, but your m/b temps
seems just fine to me; 2) test the RAM - I like Memtest86 from
www.memtest86.com - let the test run for an extended (like overnight)
period of time - unless errors are seen immediately; 3) test the hard
drive with a diagnostic utility from the mftr.; 4) the power supply may
be going bad or be inadequate for the devices you have in the system;
5) test the motherboard with something like TuffTest from
www.tufftest.com.

Just because a device is new doesn't mean it can't fail. In fact,
hardware failure usually occurs very soon with a new component or it
will go for years.

There's no way to diagnose your friend's machine from the information
you've provided. Your friend should do the normal troubleshooting as
follows:

1) scan with current antivirus ("current" means a version not earlier
than 2002 but using updated virus definitions); 2) remove spyware with
Spybot Search & Destroy (www.safer-networking.org) and Ad-aware
(www.lavasoftusa.com). These programs are free, so use them both since
they complement each other. You may also want to run the latest
CWShredder from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.html. Always
read the instructions before running a spyware removal tool. Be sure to
update these programs before running, and it is a good idea to do
virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode; 3) delete temporary and Temporary
Internet Files; 4) stop unnecessary services/programs from starting
with Windows - see www.blackviper.com for services info and
www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm for programs info - 5) look in
Event Viewer for clues; 6) make sure you've visited Windows Update and
applied all security patches.

Richard; Yes I did do all that and updated the drivers from their
websites. Some changed as I had a different motherboard then. My new
power supply is 500 watts and the also I installed new 2700 memory
matched to motherboard from manufactur suggestion. It is for a 1024
megs worth as well. I did blow all dust and installed like I said a
new more powerful CFU fan and much bigger than my previous with new
heatsink as well. One other thing not mentined is I have a wireless
link setup on that pc but am not downloading nothing at time when it
does this. That is from D-Link and the newer faster G series. Nick

HTH,

Malke

Malke; I will do these tests and see. The power supply is 500 watts
new and the memory is the new 2700 variety matched to motherboard and
is for 1024 megs so plenty there. I have a wireless connection from
D-Link attached to that pc with the newer faster G series but am not
downloading at time but the connection is open. Could that have a play
as well. In other words I leave the computer on unattended and come
ack and sometimes screensaver screen on and sometimes not but it is
froze and not every time. Go figure. I'm bugged on it. Nick

I don't know if this is of help but ..

I have a couple of PC's and one of them running Windows 2000 quite often would have similar problems to that discribed regarding freezing up. It also occasionally would re-boot when left alone. I had the screensaver enabled and always thought that it was some sort of bug within the screen saver program. Just recently things got really, really bad and I decided I need someone with a bit more knowledge as the PC was dying every few minutes.

To cut a long story short the problem turned out to be with one of the 256 mb RAM chips

I would certainly do the RAM check suggested previously. What I didn't know was that the RAM check on boot up will not detect the problem I was having with my RAM according to the repair guy. I of course didn't suspect my problem was with the RAM as I assumed (how foolish of me) that this was checked on boot up.
