So I get the 7.5 version and it fights for control from previous one....

Who the heck is programming this?

Ok so the messenger team does not want to make a delete function to remove
old version before new one is installed?

Why can't the installer do it right the first time?

Grrrrr

Greetings,

Actually the "old one" is Windows Messenger which belongs to the Windows team -- you're
install MSN Messenger which belongs to the MSN team. As such, the installer can't do
anything about the other way (and especially since some functionality in MSN Messenger
actually requires Windows Messenger to be there or it won't work).

You can simply disable Windows Messenger. To do so, open it up (click Start, then
Run, type "msmsgs" and click OK), click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and uncheck 'Run this
Program when Windows starts' or 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts' (depending on
version) as well as 'Allow this program to run in the background' or 'Allow Windows Messenger
to run in the background' (depending on version).

However, as long as you don't mind losing Remote Assistance, Whiteboard or Application
Sharing within MSN Messenger, you can simply uninstall Windows Messenger by clicking the
Start button, then click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,

I have read thousands of post and have helped thousands of people
with this confusion and problem...

IT IS a stupid move of MS to make 2 similar programs that compete with each
other this way, and I could think of hundreds of ways they could have
avoided it, leaving the 2 programs available and functional but giving you
the option to
hide one and let it not take control...

You can do this now.. but you have to get into various settings. Why not
have a user friendly one click way to handle this?
