I have added a hard drive from an old computer to my new system. I am not
able to run programs from the old hard drive. It was run on windows 98 SE.
Would installing XP on the old hard drive resolve this problem or is there
another solution. I have Office 2000 on the old drive but have lost the
installation disks, this is the main program I would like to be able to use.

Sorry, you can't do what you want to do.Programs need to be installed on the
computer you want to use them on. If you don't have the Office 2000
installation CD, you're out of luck and need to buy it again.

The reason for this is that a program installation doesn't put everything in
one place. It also puts files and entries in several other places within
\Windows, principally in the registry. When you just attach the old hard
drive, you get some of the program, but you're missing all the registry
entries in *your* \windows folder, as well as other files, and it won't
work.

To run them on the current installation of XP they need to be installed
from the original media. Only the most simple of programs can be run
without installation by clicking the .exe file but most write to the
registry during installation. Installing XP on that drive won't help.
The progams have to be installed into XP.

There are programs that can recover programs for use in another MS windows
environment. MS Office 2k, due to its registry complexity, is not one that
can be moved. It must be installed from its original installation media.
In this case, its a CD, not disks.
