hi - I have just installed a copy of XP Pro (full - not an upgrade) which
leaves me with an OEM copy of XP Home. Can I use the XP Home copy on another
machine?

JohnT,

Yes, if the XP Home lic. has never been installed and activated on a
computer you can install it on a computer and activate it. In other words,
the OEM licence is not tranferable. This means it is meant for one computer,
period. Not one computer at a time.

The OEM copy is tied to the first system on which it's installed. It
can't be transferred. Read the EULA on the CD for more information.

No. By your own admission, you'll have an OEM license for WinXP.
An OEM version must be sold with a non-peripheral piece of hardware
(normally a motherboard or hard rive, if not an entire PC) and is
_permanently_ bound to the first PC on which it's installed. An OEM
license, once installed, is not legitimately transferable to another
computer under _any_ circumstances.

Or yes. The answer is either a yes or a no. If the OEM copy hasn't been
installed on hardware, then it is not bound to it. Once it is, then it is.
So if it has not been installed and activated on a PC ever, then it remains
free until it is. So the answer could be a "yes" if no use has been made of
the licence.

True enough. But it was clear from the OP's post that the OEM WinXP
Home license had been installed and was now thought to be available
because it had been replaced by WinXP Pro.

Unfortunately no. Assuming that you previously had it installed on the
computer that now has XP Professional on it, it is not available to be used
on any other computer. The OEM license ties it permanently to the first
computer it's installed on. This is perhaps the biggest disadvantage of an
OEM version, and is one of the main reasons it is considerably cheaper than
the full retail version.

Not if you want to conform with Microsoft's EULA. That said, if it's
been over 120 days since you last activated it, technically, yes, you
can. It's up to you if you want to deprive a struggling to make ends
meet company like MS the money you will have to spend to buy another one.
