Java failed a scheduled update today. Maybe it's java's problem, but it'salso
Vistas. It claimed the installer failed.

Vista did nothing with the failure.
Normally if something runs, and fails, vista is all over it, with 'failure
detected, searching for fix' then sending off the report.
It just sat there while java said the installer was screwed up.

Any ideas why Vista missed something like this ?

I got a UAC prompt out of the blue yesterday. Not knowing what it was
for, I declined - you're not supposed to get unexpected UAC prompts.
Java then put an icon in the system tray saying an update was available.
When I clicked the icon to install the update, I got another UAC prompt
(so that's what it was for!) This time I gave it admin access, and it
installed without a problem.

Maybe you need to give the updater admin access? Have you turned UAC
off? I've heard turning it off can cause problems with some installers
and other programs which expect to need to ask for admin access.
